"Observer’s Effect: That which is observed, modifies the behavior being observed." -- Roshan Singh
In this blog post, we resume our discussion of the First Awakening of the Game: 1 Billion W.A.T.C.H.ers. Continuing with the second letter of W.A.T.C.H., which stands for “Self-Awareness.”
A – Self-Awareness
According to Stephen Covey, in his book, “The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People,” humans are bestowed with four endowments that enable us to have a multitude of choices. Among these gifts is self-awareness; and, these choices differentiate us from other lifeforms on the planet. Within the endowment of self-awareness is a fundamental principle about the nature of humanity that reveals: between stimulus and response, we have the freedom to choose.
We get our social cues from observing others’ patterns of behaviors. Therefore, people are always watching each other…watching you. Observing your behaviors, your choices, your responses, often formulating whether or not they are inspired or uninspired by you.
When I worked at #ProcterandGamble, I was reminded that there were six degrees of separation between me and anyone else in #Cincinnati. All the choices I made could impact the company. It was made clear to consider how it would look if my actions were reported on the front page of #TheNewYorkTimes.
In the Balance Game, as a Player and a Coach, it is important to ask myself, “What image do I want to uphold?” Very much like being a leader in any organization.
Take a moment and say to yourself, “Stop and observe yourself.” Observe your thoughts, observe your breath, observe your posture. And be impartial about your observations, maintaining equanimity in that space – neither judging the self or labeling the self.
In the moment you pose that command to your brain, you step out of yourself, and become the impartial observer of your thoughts, choices, emotions and being-ness. Try this interesting exercise and let me know what happens. I welcome your feedback.
In the YourDay BalanceGame, the goal is to be transparent. Remember – there is nothing hidden under the sun (or moon). So, be honest about what you learn about yourself. We welcome and accept you as you are.
Take initiative in life by accepting that your decisions (and how they align with life’s universal principles) are the primary determining factor for effectiveness in your life. When you take responsibility for your choices and the consequences that follow, you become the master of your own destiny.
"...I thank whatever gods may be For my unconquerable soul... "It matters not how strait the gate, How charged with punishments the scroll, I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul." -- Invictus, William Ernest Henley
